You might consider joining CalRTA which fights for senior issues. “CalRTA’s mission is to protect and advocate for retired and active educators’ pensions and other retirement benefits and to support public education in our communities.” In this political climate, it is a good time to build coalitions with other organizations who are fighting to save our institutions.
I joined this organization three years ago because they seemed to be doing the most to fight for the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government pension Offset (WEP/GPO) which affects many part-time faculty. Although that legislation was passed, I feel even more urgency now to find avenues to combat Trump’s assault on many of our institutions. I am really impressed with their use of a preloaded letter writing system that members can easily use to write to Congress weekly to advocate for our issues. I feel empowered to have my voice heard through their letter writing and calling campaigns.
There are two CalRTA groups that meet in Santa Clara County. The one I belong to meets monthly on the second Friday of the month from 11 to 1 PM. There is always a speaker or other entertainment. We meet in restaurants or at the Masonic Lodge. The dues are $60/year.
Recently, I was part of a 42-member CalRTA delegation that traveled to Washington D.C. to talk with our legislators. Our local legislators are Democrats, so I felt like I was preaching to the choir. They shared my frustration. I was most encouraged when I found out Ro Khanna was holding 3 townhalls in Republican districts, where on Trump’s advice, Republican legislators refused to hold townhalls.
I know many of you have been to marches and actions, but this may not be an option as we age. You might consider getting involved. Go to https://calrta.org to learn more. Our next meeting is Friday, May 9th, 2025 at the San Jose Masonic Center. Feel free to contact me for more information at kathyjasper@yahoo.com
